Which case should I use?

CaseExampleTypical use
Sentence caseHow to write a cover letterBody text, UI labels, GOV.UK and many blog headings
Title CaseHow to Write a Cover LetterBook titles, AP/Chicago headlines
UPPER CASEWARNINGShort labels and acronyms – not paragraphs
camelCasecoverLetterTitleJavaScript and Java variables
snake_casecover_letter_titlePython, database columns
kebab-casecover-letter-titleURLs, CSS classes, file names

All-caps paragraphs are harder to read because words lose their distinctive outline of ascenders and descenders. Save capitals for short labels.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between title case and sentence case?

Title case capitalises the main words of a heading ("The Cat in the Hat"). Sentence case capitalises only the first word and proper nouns ("The cat in the hat"). AP and Chicago styles use title case for headlines; many websites and the GOV.UK style guide use sentence case.

Which words stay lowercase in title case?

Short articles, conjunctions and prepositions – a, an, the, and, but, or, for, nor, of, on, in, at, to, by, per, vs, via – unless they are the first or last word. Style guides differ on longer prepositions; this tool follows the common Chicago-style short list.

How do I fix text typed with Caps Lock on?

Paste it in and choose Sentence case. It lowercases everything, then capitalises the first letter of each sentence and the pronoun "I". Check proper nouns afterwards.

What are camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case?

Naming styles for code and URLs. camelCase joins words with capitals (userName), snake_case uses underscores (user_name), kebab-case uses hyphens (user-name), and CONSTANT_CASE is upper snake case.
