How the estimate works

The starting point is the widely used rule of thumb that a page of 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins holds about 500 words single-spaced. Wider typefaces fit fewer letters per line, so Arial and Verdana give fewer words per page and Courier, a monospaced typewriter face, fewer still.

Font size changes both the letters per line and the lines per page, so words per page scale roughly with the square of the size: going from 12 pt to 10 pt fits about 44% more. Double spacing halves the lines. Margins change the printable area directly.

Real documents include headings, short lines at the end of paragraphs and dialogue, so treat the result as a close estimate for continuous prose. For an exact count of what you've written, paste it into the word counter.
