How density is calculated – and why phrases count double
Density = occurrences × words in the phrase ÷ total words × 100. A two-word phrase used 5 times in a 250-word text takes up 10 of the 250 words, so its density is 4%, not 2%. That is why the keyword box above multiplies by the phrase length.
Use the numbers as a mirror, not a target. If a term sits far above everything else, read those sentences aloud: repetition that sounds clumsy to a person is exactly what search engines' spam policies describe as keyword stuffing. Swapping some for pronouns or natural variations usually reads better.
Questions people ask
What is keyword density?
The share of all words in a text taken up by a keyword or phrase: occurrences × words in the phrase ÷ total words × 100.
What is a good keyword density for SEO?
There is no target number. Google's own guidance warns against keyword stuffing and says to write for people. Use density to spot accidental repetition, or to confirm a page actually covers its topic – not to hit a percentage.
Why are words like "the" and "and" missing?
Common function words (stop words) are hidden by default because they dominate every text. Untick "Hide common words" to include them.
Can I use this as a word frequency counter?
Yes. The single-word tab is a full word frequency list, sorted by count. Download it as CSV for a spreadsheet.
