Paragraph counter
Counts paragraphs and shows how long each one is, so an essay's structure is visible before you read a word.

Add text above to map its paragraphs.
Paragraphs over 150 words are marked red – long for a screen, fine for some academic writing.
Questions people ask
How are paragraphs counted?
A paragraph is any block of text separated from the next by at least one blank line. A single line break inside a block does not start a new paragraph, which matches how most editors and web pages treat text.
How long should a paragraph be?
There is no fixed rule. On screens, 40–100 words (two to five sentences) is easy to scan. Academic paragraphs often run 100–200 words because each develops one argued point.
My text shows as one paragraph – why?
The paragraphs are probably separated by single line breaks. Use "Blank line between lines" below to turn every line break into a paragraph break.
How many paragraphs is a 500-word essay?
Usually five: an introduction, three body paragraphs of about 100 words each, and a conclusion.
