Sentence counter

0 sentences0 words avg

Sentence rhythm

One bar per sentence. The dashed line marks 25 words; bars past it turn red.

Add some text above to see the bars.

How the Flesch score is built

206.835 − 1.015 × 0 − 84.6 × 0 = –

0 is your words per sentence; 0 is syllables per word (estimated by counting vowel groups). Shorter sentences and shorter words both push the score up. Try splitting the longest sentence above and watch the middle term shrink.

Questions people ask

How does the sentence counter decide where a sentence ends?

A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space, or at a blank line. Common abbreviations such as Mr., Dr., e.g. and decimals like 3.5 are not treated as endings.

What is a good average sentence length?

For general readers, 15–20 words on average is comfortable. Plain-language guides such as the UK Government Digital Service style guide recommend keeping most sentences under about 25 words.

What is the Flesch reading ease score?

A 0–100 formula from Rudolf Flesch (1948) based on words per sentence and syllables per word. Higher is easier: 60–70 is plain English, below 30 is academic.

Why vary sentence length?

A run of same-length sentences reads flat. Mixing short and long sentences creates rhythm and lets the short ones land with emphasis.
